Love your selfie is a project aimed at promoting a positive body image. I hope that people from all backgrounds will join in and share images of themselves that they love or like. It is my belief that we have been told for too long that there is a desirable way to ‘look’ and that when we do not conform to this ‘look’ we are labeled as being ‘other’. Why should we put up with being called too fat or too thin, too tall or too short? Who decided what was ‘normal’ anyway? I myself struggle a great deal with my body image, avoiding mirrors when I gain weight and I know it contributes a great deal to my depression.
My hope with this project is that we can all come together, and show the world as a whole that we are beautiful, sexy and amazing, no matter what shape, size or background we come from. Let us prove that EVERY BODY is beautiful.
How does it work?
There are 2 ways to take part. You could write a blog post telling us about the image(s) you’re sharing, what you like about them, and your thoughts on this topic.
If you just want to share one (or two or three – I’m not putting a limit on this) picture(s) you can do so by submitting each picture using the form at the side. I will add it to the slideshow above. Please make sure to include what you like about that picture in the message box, and complete details of where you want me to link back to (ie your blog or twitter url). After all it is your image and if visitors want to find you they need to know how. If you have any issues with this you can find me on twitter and send me your image there.
If you want to join in but don’t have your own blog, why not write a little guest post on here and I will publish it for you? Just send me a message using the form at the side, and I will contact you to discuss it.
One more thing, don’t get hung up on the word ‘selfie’, as long as it is a picture of you I don’t care who took it! Selfie made a better title but really the message is love your self ♡.
One of the great things I have found about taking photos is how different angles can make a difference. Finding the right angle to show your body can change how you see them too, and if you have any tips or examples that you can share with others on how to use camera angles, please do. You might just be able to help someone else to love their selfie! If you are able to, it would be great if you can show this by sharing images from angles you feel are unflattering as well as the image you like.
Photoshopping is of course a popular tool, and there are many similar apps for phones that will smooth out your skin and remove blemishes. As much as possible, I would ask that you make little notations if you have edited your selfie, not because I disapprove, but so we are truthful about the images. For example I always remove my tattoos but I do not smooth my skin. Personally would prefer to see stretch marks, scars, and wrinkles in the images shared here. I want to encourage people to love themselves as they are.
I am trying to lose weight at the moment, as I have gained back most of the 5 stone I lost a few years ago, and my personal project ‘The Body Diaries’ are chronicling that journey. If you have achieved a weight loss and/or a body transformation and would like to share before and after pictures, that would be absolutely amazing.
I want this to be a celebration of all bodies.
Thank you for reading.
I hope you join in with this project, and don’t forget to….
